Betty Pogor

I paint intuitively, working from imagination rather than predetermined ideas. My practice is rooted in constant change — an ongoing process of experimentation, discovery, and transformation. I am continually pushing forward, allowing each piece to lead me toward the next. Materials and unexpected elements often become part of the conversation. Found objects from my studio, my home, or the vast land surrounding me in North Andover sometimes make their way into the work, becoming embedded within the layers of paint, charcoal, marks, and gesture.

Every painting begins with an underpainting — bursts of brilliant orange, instinctive lines, scratches, and shapes that establish movement and energy before imagery emerges. From this foundation, form and emotion gradually surface, revealing a visual narrative that is never entirely planned.

Viewers frequently see suggestive forms and imagery within the work. When brought to my attention, these images often escape me still… meaning emerges through the act of looking itself.
